Stannies caters for a variety of different students, with a variety of different interests and hobbies, so on top of our academic life, we as a college have a great co-curricular life. Some of our co-curricular activities include; Sport, Creative Arts and Agriculture.
SPORT
The College plays a variety of different sports throughout the summer and winter seasons. The schools main sports include Cricket, Basketball, Touch Football, Swimming, Tennis, Athletics and Rugby Union, however sports like Rugby League, AFL and Chess are played at small competition level against schools in the district on special gala days. The school plays rugby, cricket and basketball in the ISA (independent sporting association) against other schools, mainly in Sydney. This involves boys travelling the 2 hours, every second Saturday, to go and represent the College in all different sporting endeavours. Our boys and coaches dedication to our sporting program should be commended. Our touch football and junior cricketers should not go unnoticed as they play in the Bathurst district competition, making that competition more competitive for our wider community.
Rugby holds a great importance at the college as it has for many years. Stannies first started its rugby program in the 1870's, and our boys today still compete n these same colours, making our jerseys some of the oldest in the country! Our boys still participate on and off the fields with great joy and enthusiasm. Our rugby program is inclusive for all. Our main goal is to make sure there is a place for people of all ages and all levels of abilities.
Over the years the College has competed in a variety of competitions with much success. Currently, the College competes in the Western Associated Schools Competition, the Independent Schools Association Competition as well as the Waratah Shield which is a state wide knock out competition to find the NSW Champion team. Stannies has been Western Associated Schools Champions 41 times in 46 years and has been the only country school to have won the Waratah Shield, which it has done in 1974, 1980, 1981 and 1995.
CREATIVE ARTS.
Stannies has a strong tradition of sport, that is true, however we like to think of our boys as versatile students, who excel in all areas of schooling, from singing to performing to visual arts, our boys enjoy participating in the wide range of arts offered.
Every year the school runs a musical, directed by our extremely talented head of Creative Arts, with the help of many of our other dedicated staff members working in the singing, lighting and costuming industries. This year the students are busy rehearsing for the Addams Family Musical which is open for the public to come and see, so we are all extremely excited to see how great this performance will be.
For the boys interested in visual arts, our art teacher, Mr Orme-Smith runs a great program after school called SADA, where the boys get together and express themselves through the form of art. These boys are responsible for the creation of our sets for the musicals and plays.
Once a year the school also runs the school play. The boys rehearse extremely hard, to make sure they play their characters to the best of their ability, and just like the musical, it is extremely refreshing to watch these young men and the joy they receive from performing.
Our extremely talented Ms Roth, runs band every Tuesday and Thursday morning, for students who are interested in performing in concert and on stage. This team of talented boys compete in eisteddfods for the school and support the boys who perform in the musical.
The school runs other creative activities including crew club, cantor group and choir.
AGRICULTURE.
Because many of our boys come from all different farming backgrounds, ranging from 200 acres -100 000 acres. Stannies has to supply the demands of these inquisitive boys so we run our very on school farm, which is used for not only school classes but for sports such as equestrian and cattle showing. Every Wednesday afternoon our two dedicated agriculture teacher take boys who are interested down to the farm to teach them how to ride horses and look after livestock and plants.
We are so very proud of all our boys and staff members who dedicate their time and energy into making our co-curricular program the best it can possibly be.
